Week 11 As the scheduling assignment progressed this week, what considerations were at the front of your mind?

As the scheduling assignment progressed this week, what considerations were at the front of your mind? How did you plan ahead to make sure these considerations don't cause any issues down the line? How have you prepared yourself and your production to avoid speed bumps?

I’ve decided to allow myself two days for each centenarian. One day will be for the talking head interview and visiting places in their towns with special meaning ie. old homes, businesses, etc. The other day will be mostly devoted to shooting B-roll footage or run-and-gun interviews in which they go about a typical day. I know going in that I’m going to have to be flexible and sensitive to their needs as a senior citizen. I’m sending participants questions in advance, but I’m also allowing time for follow-up questions or any stories they wish to share. The extra day will also allow for that because they may be more comfortable talking with me by then after the “formal” interview has been completed. I may even take the opportunity to expand on topics/answers not fully explored the previous day.

What wheels are turning? Are you going to apply for a grant/lab/fellowship/residency OR create a crowdfunding campaign? Why?

What wheels are turning? Are you going to apply for a grant/lab/fellowship/residency OR create a crowdfunding campaign? Why?

I'm applying to the Filmed in NC grant because I think my Carolina Centenarians documentary would be a good fit for it. I found that many of the questions they asked were similar to information that has been done in several of our producing assignments (thanks, Shannon). And the maximum amount they offer would cover the bulk of my expenses: travel. Before choosing this particular grant, I did look at several others that I will also eventually apply to. I also looked at crowdfunding sites like Seed and Spark for inspiration, which makes me think that I will probably end up doing a crowdfunding campaign at some point too.

In relation to Scheduling your production dates, what considerations are you keeping at the front of your mind? How are you planning ahead to make sure these considerations don't cause any issues? How might they impact your timeline? And, how are you preparing yourself and your production to avoid speed bumps? (100-150 word response)

My shooting schedule is completely dependent on finding participants and accommodating their schedule. It’s difficult to nail down at this point because there is a lot of legwork that goes into finding them and contacting them. Generally, I could shoot Saturday through Tuesday until summer, then almost any day when classes cease. Ideally, I’ll have most (or all of my interviews) completed by May, so the summer will be devoted to working with archival footage and editing. Realistically, that may not happen, so I will probably begin preliminary editing (organizing, synching, etc) footage, digitizing their family photos and videos, scouring archives, etc during the next few months. A small crew (or just me in some cases) allows for a lot of flexibility. I’m aiming to interview five centenarians, so I gotta hustle.
